In Phuket, Thailand, it is not uncommon for new believers to experience persecution from family members when they turn away from Buddhism. Operation 2nd Wave (O2W) missionaries Rob and Judy Griffioen have seen many of their Thai friends endure hardship for the sake of Jesus. One of these friends is Duan.
Duan's life has not been easy, but God has been faithful. When Duan accepted Christ her husband told her that if she was going to worship God he would divorce her. Duan left home and sought refuge at her church, but when she woke up the next morning God spoke to her, telling her to return to her husband.
In obedience, Duan returned. Despite her husband's anger, God moved powerfully. In fury, her husband threw her Bibles out of the window and set fire to them. Duan did the only thing she could: she prayed.
Heavy rains fell, dousing the flames with water until the fire went out. Duan prayed all night while her husband slept. As he slept the fear of God entered him. When he awoke the next morning he was repentant.
Duan took her husband to church where he confessed his sins and asked Jesus to be the Lord of his life. Day by day he is being transformed as he accepts God's grace.
Though the waters rose and the darkness surrounded her, Duan pressed on and found God in the storm.
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze." - Isaiah 43:2
