When God asks us to do something, there is no greater reward than stepping out in faith and doing it. Though risk is involved, God desires obedience, and it is through these acts of trust that we are refined. So when God prompted Louise Sinclair-Peters, serving with Team 2000 in Thailand, to reach out to Wicki, she did. And while she experienced fear in the unknown, Louise quickly learned that a life surrendered to God overflows with blessings to reveal His mercy and faithfulness. Though a new Christian, Wicki’s life was burdened by fear, and daily she felt strain of physical exhaustion. Wicki’s husband was an alcoholic and a gambler, owing money to various loan sharks throughout the city, and he made it Wicki’s job to ensure that the debts were paid off. All day long she worked as a slave to try to cover the debt that her husband had incurred. And if she wasn’t working, then she was running away from loan sharks. Wicki’s existence was characterized by total crisis. When Louise felt the Lord asking her to intervene, she was fearful. Investing in Wicki’s life would be a frightening challenge. But as she walked in faith toward Wicki, encouraging her, praying for her, and discipling her, God took Louise’s own heart, timid and anxious, and reformed it into a heart that loves like Christ. And it is this love that blessed Louise, allowing her to share in the joy of watching God’s transforming power at work in Wicki’s life – changing her from a woman who was drowning in debt, to one who experienced freedom from the greatest debt of all.
